"Busy Again"
Over the past 3-4 weeks Room 3, with help from Rooms 5 and 6 have been hard at work putting bark around the plants down at our ever-developing rest area. Room 3 students have also been across to pick the vegetables next to the Wee Red Barn's strawberry patches. We managed to get a large amount of beans, tomatoes, butternut pumpkins, onions, tomatoes, plus a few courgettes and cucumbers. We are looking forward to cooking some of these vegetables up and making soup, quiches and frittatas to try soon!! Thanks again to Dot and Alan Bissett of the Wee Red Barn for letting us use their land and providing the seeds for us to plant. Thanks also to Tess Geard for coming in and preparing all the yummy food with our cooking crew.
ENVIRO 2011 - OUR FIRST WORKING BEE!!
Wow, what a great morning we had this morning. Students form Room 3 and Room 5 buddied together to get a lot of jobs done around the school and at the Waipipi Road rest area. We had groups of students doing everything from seed-planting, recycling and ground tidying, compost bin relocation to weeding and barking at the rest area. A big thank you must go to those parents who were able to come in and lend a hand - Rob Baker, Joe Potangaroa and Lisa Junger. Thank you also to all the students who worked so hard, you all achieved a lot today!!
The Envirogroup has been hard at work developing the rest area along Waipipi Road. Over 400 plants have been put in around the stream. We have been delighted to see so many people stopping to use the rest area and enjoy what is becoming a lovely spot to stop and enjoy.
Check out the photos below of our most recent planting afternoon. Enviro students threw themselves into planting more natives, grasses and flaxes.
Top tip for planting!!!!!!!!!(straight from our local hotline)
The Marigold is an essential plant for any herb or vegetable garden These plants help defend your vegetables against pests and also help in sterilising your soil. Plant them in rows, about twenty centimetres apart, amongst your vergetables and they will love you for it. For the more adventurous of us, these plants bring colour to salads and other culinary dishes. Their bright yellow and orange flowers also add a cheerful note amongst the drab greens and greys of our vegetable garden.
